Top 10 Issues That Lead to Projects, Falling Behind (TM) – Week 1…

Welcome back Everyone,

Hope you all had a Great Australian Day – long weekend with your family and friends

So, lets get straight into it…

Thought we’d start this week by getting into the…

Top 10 Issues That Lead to Projects Falling Behind (TM),

… and what you can do about it.

This week, we’ll start with Why Foremen are Oblivious to Fortnightly Programmes and their importance in respects to the success of the projects.

This is one area that tends to NOT have the attention required and has lead to many projects falling behind. Whether it be through the lack of planning, comparative or regular review of the Fortnightly Programmes against the main programme.

One of the common mistakes done with fortnightly programmes, is the lack of planning prior to starting on site, which plays a critical step into how the project is likely to start and play out, through the remainder of the project.

And if your initial subcontractors for the first week or two, are not finalised with starting dates through your Fortnightly Programme, you could quickly lose 1-2 weeks as the projects stalls, before it can even start.

Another important part of Fortnightly Programmes is their required connection and parallel alignment with the main programme, especially around critical paths (tasks), which if not adhered to, could result in creeping of the programme.

This could result with serious delays such as missed tasks, rectification works or even adjustments to the original design, that can be detrimental to the overall programme, budget and profits.

Here’s some examples…

  • About 91% of contractors and clients, felt that they were not trained in designing and/or managing programmes.
  • or that, less than 15% of these contractors actual integrated their fortnightly programmes with main programme.
  • And that about 93% of clients and contractors thought that there was a serious need for improvements in training and education around designing effective programmes for projects.

Now, i’m sure you may be thinking this is NOT A BIG DEAL, but when you realise that the

TOTAL GLOBAL CONSTRUCTION MARKET (CIC) for 2015 was estimated at US$8.5 TRILLION and expected to be worth over US$10.5 TRILLION by 2020.

It all of a sudden puts everything into perspective…

Including just how important Fortnightly Programme are to the success of projects and a core ingredient to becoming a Productive Foremen.

That being said, the lack of education/training, knowledge and regular reviews around Fortnightly Programmes has been a HUGE ISSUE, which has rippled across the building industry, from foremen/leading hands right through to project/state managers.
