Partnerships… aligned intent and direction

NOW, continuing from last week thought we would go deeper, with each one.

So this week, i thought we would talk about how foremen and contractor/suppliers or client/stakeholders need to be in-line with each other in the intent and direction, under the right environment.

Whether it be working towards mutually creating success in their respective professions in completing project on time, within budget and co-operatively as a larger team.

And I’m sure at face value, you would assume that everyone’s on the same page. But its not until you dig deeper, that you realise that sub-consciously this may not be so. And if it’s different, then you can understand why you hadn’t got the results that you were anticipating.

So let me give you some examples…

  • contractor is focused on another project, which has subsequently pushed your project onto back burner
  • your client has declined progress payment
  • you as foremen has made it difficult for the contractor and their employees, who know are reluctant to going onto site, to do the works
  • contractor has been delayed, back-charged or losing money on this project
  • contractor has not been paid progress payment for last month
  • other builder, pays contractor within 7 days of invoice, oppose to your 30-60 day timeframe
  • contractors parking cars in neighbour (stakeholder) driveway, resulting in compliant form neighbour to council
  • contractor/yourself, have family issues (e.g. health, financial etc issues)
  • and so on…

So, as you can see, these are just some examples that could alter the “intent and direction” of the contractor/supplier or client/stakeholder and prevent or significantly affect your project from completing on time, within budget and in a mutual acceptance/success.

Furthermore, these examples can creep in at any stage during the project, which can result in the changing of the dynamics of the team, very quickly.

In conclusion, for partnership to work  it important to ensure open and mutual communication to your team and if you sense something is off, immediately work to discuss the situation and what could be done about it.

And remember, it could be something as simple as sharing the situation, showing interest/concern or letting them know that you will follow up with upper management, that could prevent the intent and direction from deviating from course.

Next week, we will be diving into “mutual understanding and respect” for one another in relation to the importance of Partnership, as Productive Foremen.
